Family Tree

Intro

The family tree figures large in Michael Huey’s œuvre, which draws from and responds to an exhaustive reservoir of primary source materials. (In his investigations, the notion of what constitutes the archive is ever-expanding.) Nature—the tree—offers itself up as symbol, metaphor, and inspiration, a model organizing principle in his genealogical work and in that as an artist. The tree in nature binds—and becomes a reservoir for—carbon. The family tree, similarly, binds and holds memory until it is harvested and released again by the artist.
